do peptides show up on sports drug tests?
updated
for tested athletes, WADA's list decides this, and it names peptides directly. BPC-157 and TB-500 are prohibited at all times; GLP-1 drugs are monitored instead.
verdict: often yes: many peptides are prohibited at all times (list text direct / GLP-1 drugs monitored only)
quick answer
often, yes. WADA's 2026 Prohibited List prohibits non-approved substances (class S0, which names BPC-157) and peptide hormones, growth factors and related substances (class S2, which names TB-500 and growth hormone secretagogues such as ibutamoren) at all times, in and out of competition. semaglutide and tirzepatide are not on the list; WADA's 2027 monitoring program tracks them. this check covers sport, not workplace or military drug panels.
the evidence
the list names peptides directly. (supported)
WADA's 2026 list names BPC-157 under S0, and TB-500, GH-releasing peptides and secretagogues such as ibutamoren (MK-677) under S2. both classes are prohibited at all times, in and out of competition. a doping control laboratory at Ghent University identified TB-500's peptide fragment and proposed a way to detect it in plasma and urine.
a missing name is not a pass. (gap)
S2 also covers other substances with a similar chemical structure or biological effect, and S0 covers any pharmacological substance that no other section of the list addresses and that no government health authority currently approves for human therapeutic use. the 2027 list, in force from 1 January 2027, adds peptides to the S0 examples, and its S2 text reads the same as in 2026.
GLP-1 drugs sit in a different box. (risk)
semaglutide and tirzepatide are on WADA's 2027 monitoring program, which tracks substances that are not on the Prohibited List. this check gives no detection windows and does not cover workplace or military drug panels.
bottom line
for a tested athlete, a research label on the vial does not change the status: S0 covers unapproved substances, and S2 covers anything with a similar structure or effect to the substances it names.
scores
- human sport rule: 100 · WADA 2026 list: S0 and S2 substances are prohibited at all times, in and out of competition
- mechanism-based coverage: 100 · S2 also covers other substances with a similar chemical structure or biological effect
- research-label gap: 100 · S0 covers any pharmacological substance that no other section of the list addresses and that no government health authority currently approves for human therapeutic use; the 2027 list adds peptides to its examples
- GLP-1 prohibition: 0 · semaglutide and tirzepatide sit on WADA's 2027 monitoring program, which covers substances not on the list
